World Oceans Day 2017

World Oceans was first introduced in 1992 to raise awareness of the crucial role the sea plays as sources of food, oxygen and medicine. It was officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 2008 and is observed on June 8 each year. 2002. The day is designated by the United Nations for appreciating & protecting the Earth’s seas. The world is 71% water and a great quote we would like to share is “How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly ocean. – Arthur C. Clarkeand”

Here at the Catamaya we see firsthand the importance of protecting our oceans. We are blessed to see so many creatures daily and be surrounded by the beautiful Ocean.

Somethings you can do to make a difference could be to stop using plastic straws, recycle, eat seafood from sustainable sources.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” ~Mother Teresa

While snorkeling we always ask you to use a life jacket. Because we snorkel in a national park and are so close to marine life and corals we ask you to respect this as both a safety call and a prevention to stop further coral damage.

Corals are the lungs of the ocean. Coral reefs also play an important role in helping to manage carbon monoxide levels. This makes them of great benefit to the world’s population.
